A much needed break

Sorry for the lack of posts but we have been away a bunch visiting family and just relaxing at home reading and watching movies (-:
I am back to work tomorrow )-: and Matthew still has another week off (lucky guy).
In a couple days we will be at our 5 month mark (5 months waiting for a referral). Lets hope we don’t have too many more months to wait.
Here are just a few pictures from Xmas, and one from today (we had a really bad wind storm and this tree was pulled out by the roots – yikes! A good day to stay inside and read a book).

Water

I love this movie! It is a story about standing up against oppression. It is about a child who is forced into marriage and when her husband dies she has to go and live in a widow colony. The movie is set in 1938 in India and has the backdrop of the rise of Mahatma Gandhi.

It is in Hindi with English subtitles. Watch it if you get the chance, great story!

It also gets you thinking about religious and cultural traditions and gets you to ask yourself the question -when should we follow or challenge them? How critical of them should we be?

Happy B-day Matty

Happy 29th Bday to my hubby. The thing I love the most about him is that he makes me laugh every day.
I'm not sure if he will be 'havin' a laugh' when he sees this picture on my blog though. haha

ok, one picture to prove he is not always crazy(hehe)

Great Video!!

This is a very cool video I came accross on another blog. I think you will enjoy it.
Thank you everyone for your kind words following my last post! You always help to lift my spirits!!

I agree with the video, there is something quite self centered about thinking that Africa "NEEDS" us. We have a lot to gain as well from forming a partnership with people in another part of the world. We can learn about a new culture - a new way of being and existing in the world. We can also learn about the strength of the human spirit and that happiness doesn't have to mean having more stuff. Great video!

Feeling low

Sorry, not much to say that is positive today. I am having my own little pitty party because now they are saying 8+ months for a referral (and I heard someone even say 9+). It seems before a month even passes a month is added.

Bad Taste

I love this book. I recommend it to everyone!! I picked up a few different ones that try to get across the idea that people have interesting and unique differences that should be celebrated, but that we all have similarities as well. This one I thought did the best job of getting this idea across. I think this is such an important concept to teach children, I love this book!
(picture of Susan from Seinfeld)
Over the last few weeks I have been spending a lot of time licking envelopes to send out the Canadian Humanitarian 2009 Fundraiser Calendars our London group came up with.
This past Wed and Thurs night I did a big pile of them so I could mail them and for a good day afterwards I couldn’t get that envelope glue taste out of my mouth. In hind sight I should have used a damp cloth on the envelopes. For a laugh, all I could think about all day Friday was that Seinfeld episode where George’s fiancĂ© dies after licking all of the wedding envelopes for their wedding invitations (because of the glue on the envelopes). What was I thinking…use a wet cloth!

World Gone Mad

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but did anyone else hear about this in the news?

The Walmart employee who was trampled to death by a crowd of shoppers entering the store for "Black Friday" deals in New York last week. They said the crowd ripped the doors to the store off the hinges. Reports said that even as cops were trying to help the man they were being pushed around by the crowd of people wanting to get past them so they could shop.

When I heard about this I couldn't believe it. I imagine that no one intended to hurt anyone when they went shopping that morning, but come on people have some self control..... does a DVD player going on sale really have to cost someone their life? I would like to believe it isn't true, but sometimes I can't help but think our world really is going mad.

Dec 1 - World AIDS Day

People with HIV/AIDS deserve to be treated with respect and acceptance.

I've got my red ribbon on today and one of my hopes for this next year is that the stigma of HIV/AIDS in the world will be diminished.
